Mountain cottontails are small, agile rabbits commonly found in the western United States, thriving in open grasslands, shrublands, and rocky areas at higher elevations. Recognizable by their soft grayish-brown fur, white bellies, and distinctive cotton-ball tails, these rabbits blend seamlessly into their natural surroundings. They are crepuscular, meaning most active during dawn and dusk, foraging on grasses, herbs, and shrubs. Mountain cottontails are vital to their ecosystem, serving as prey for predators like foxes, hawks, and owls while also helping to disperse seeds through their feeding habits. Their quiet presence adds to the vibrancy of the mountain landscapes they inhabit.
